Alright, well thank you too.
doesn't look like anybody is here yet.
Alright, now they're starting to filter in alright. We will go ahead and get started then thank you guys so much for coming out this evening for this a 30 minute flash topic. My name is DJ. I am a graduate assistant here at Kent State and then with me. Tonight. I have Dan's alum from the Academic Success Center and I will let her take it away and tell you a little bit more about her office.
Alright, thank you David, I appreciate it. I'm welcome everyone. So as you said, my name is Deann. I am with the Academic success Center I'm. We are responsible for a lot of the tutoring, supplemental instruction and so forth, so I'm going to tell you a little bit about that. But our mantra basically is to empower students to be independent learners.
And with this slide, this tells you how you can connect with us. So we are located in the Center for Undergraduate Excellence. They you may hear it referred to as the Q. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, eight to five. Our phone number is listed there 672-3190 and you can always reach us by email at asc@kent.edu.
If you look what I have here in the slide is a copy of our.
Website So which basically is just kent.edu/ASC and we have several different places, so under the about us you would be able to apply for employment. That's one of the options that I'll talk about at the end, but you can schedule an appointment for supplemental instruction for tutoring for academic coaching. And then we also have some other resources like learning skills, workshops and things. So to talk a little bit about the tutoring that we do.
And first, let me preface by saying that all of our services are free, so there is not a charge at all for anything that we do in our office to end for tutoring specifically for tutoring and SSI, we cover approximately 103 of the core courses that are required, so your math, your science, humanities. We have a few language support for language courses.
We have some like the E con, a few site courses, some sociology courses, and things like that. So we do all of those early on courses. The things that you need to get through to get to the things that you want to do right, so to schedule tutoring, we have three different types of tutoring, so they're scheduled, which is just what it sounds like. You're going to schedule a time with a particular person.
A particular day and a particular time, and you can do that for the entire semester. Or you can do that as a one time appointment. We also have drop in tutoring so you are able to just drop in with a quick question. We also have. There's an online tutoring option that is supported by a consortium of colleges, so you may be speaking at that point with someone who is a algebra for calculus tutor.
But they may not be, as Kent State student. They might be a right state student or an Ohio U student or something like that. But that is more of a so that they can offer. It may be different times. Some of the Otter hours they say 24/7, but it all really depends on staffing.
Let's see the supplemental instruction if you're not aware supplemental instruction is a group study so it's peer facilitated, you actually have a peer leader that is in the class. With. You will use organic chemistry for an example, so they're going to class. They're meeting with the professor they're working with the syllabus, so they're doing things in real time, just like you are in the class. What they do is they work up a Lesson plan based on where you are.
And then there's a group study that occurs after. So you basically will have your lecture with the Prof and then you'll group study after the academic coaching.
That we offer is the only one on one service that we offer where you're meeting with an academic coach to work on personal goals. Any issues that you might be having, as well as different types of learning strategies and things. So coaching is really good for, especially first time students when you're just navigating the system, you know they can help you like. How do I talk to my professor with a question or concern and different things like that so the coaching is really good?
To get you connected, the peer study the supplemental instruction. That peer study is a really good way to connect to people in your class as well, so you you can sometimes will find that people will have sub study groups that come out of our SI sessions. As I mentioned, we are in the queue and a lot of our tutoring happens on the 6th floor of the library or on the 6th floor are dropping is on the 2nd floor. We have tutoring.
In different dorms, so there are a lot of different options for places to go for tutoring. We also offer virtual sessions for students who might be commuting or something like that, so there are virtuous options available.
Trying to think we try to include as many of the core requirements as possible.
It kind of depends, of course on the availability of tutors. Tutors have to have taken the course because they are. Again, they're all peer, so they had to have taken the course, completed the course with no nothing less than it be to be able to do it, and then students schedule your own. So you would just for example, you would click in here under tutoring. It would take you to a section where you would just schedule the appointment based on your individual information. One of the other.
Options that we have under our resources is this. It's called an academic success plan and this makes it really, really simple any, any and every student who's enrolled in Kent State University has access to this academic success plan on flash line. So you would basically log in with your username, your password, and then what it will do is. It'll pull up all of the courses that you would be enrolled in for that particular semester. For example, if anybody is.
Would be enrolled for spring you would see a spring schedule.
For fall you would. It would pull up anything that you're in for fall, so you're going to see something that looks similar to this. So for example you would see this student is enrolled in Chem Gen Chem 2. They're in biological functions. They are in the first year black or second year black experience biological function. So what it does is it tells you what options are available for each of those courses, so you have drop in tutoring is available for this chem.
There's also scheduled tutoring for the chemistry class. They're scheduled tutoring for biological functions, schedule tutoring for the black experience.
Supplemental instruction is available for the Gen, Chem, and the biological functions, so you'll see that anything that is available for.
Your particular class and this is individualized to every student. We also have these supporting all student options, which is the writing Commons. They do a lot of the English stuff with the papers and so forth, and then the learning skills workshops. We have four different workshops that we currently offer notetaking test taking.
What's the other one time management and study skills? So all of those options are available to students as well. So if you'll see, these are the different services that we offer the drop in the schedule DE tutoring, supplemental instruction, learning skills, and coaching. And then, as I mentioned before, we also hire. So, since all of our tutors are peer, we are the we're actually. We've moved up to be the 4th largest employer on campus. We employ about 160.
Between our front desk staff tutors as I leaders and academic coaches, we have about 160 that we employ.
So it's all of that information, so we always say, you know, once you've taken the course, if you've done well in it and you feel comfortable, come work for us and we'll, we'll pay you.
That's basically it for our services, so if anybody has any questions, I'm certainly here to answer again. That's all of our contact information. The Center for Undergraduate Excellence Q114 is our main office. Our administrative offices are in 169. I don't know why it has the 8690 number that's our tutoring coordinator's number, but it should be 6723190 and then ASC at kent.edu.
And then, of course, that's our website. So are there any questions or can I? Can I answer anything for anyone?
Yeah, thank you so much Dan. UM, it doesn't look like we have any questions currently, but we highly encourage you to ask some right now. It's a great opportunity to learn some more about the office and have Dan clear up so many things that you weren't.

How can students apply to become a tutor? Can they apply through the Flashline or through the KSU website?
And of course, they could always reach out to the office.
OK, it looks like you got.
Oh, how do you apply to be a tutor? Yeah, it's actually. If you go back to our website I'll pull this light up real quick. If you go to our website and you see there's the, there's an about US button when you click on that. It's a student employment. They you should apply initially through handshake, but if you go to that about us and you click on student employment, it'll actually link you into applying for any of the four positions that we offer.
So you can do it right from our website.
Matthias R.
07:11:01 PM
Can you schedule for peer study and tutoring 1 on 1 at same time?
Alright, somebody else have any questions? It looks like we got another one.
Drishti J.
07:11:19 PM
Can a student become a tutor as a freshman or sophomore?
Yeah, you can't. You can't do them at the same time. Peer study. You don't even have to schedule for for the peer study, which is the supplemental instruction. There's a schedule, so you will just see when sessions are occurring. You basically just show up. So for that you don't have to. The tutoring is not one on one. Tutoring is generally 3 to one ratio, so three students to one tutor. However, if you are.

07:11:59 PM
Is it 1 session at a time, or can you schedule for like once a week?
In an appointment with a tutor and there's not not two other people in that appointment. You're basically going to have a one on one, we just don't offer that always. The only one on one we have is the academic coaching, which is where you're meeting with someone. They're not tutoring the subject matter, but they're putting you in the right directions and they're helping answer questions that you have and working on study skills and things like that.
You can schedule, I'm just yeah you can.
Becoming a tutor as a freshman or sophomore. So technically, if you did any CC port CCP or courses like that. So pre college courses while you were in high school. If you did them at Kent State they will probably qualify and then you could. We've actually even had CCP students that are tutors, so that is possible. It just depends on where you've taken the course and.
Like I said, mostly we want you to have taken that course here at Kent, but usually if you come in as a freshman like your first first semester freshman, maybe not, but by a second semester you would have taken something. So usually by spraying you're qualified to tutor something and then as far as one session at a time you can. You can actually schedule just one off like I just want to stop in and see what it's all about and then. Or you can schedule for the entire semester. Students are actually able to.
You can schedule up to two sessions per week with a tutor.
Alright, so I actually have a question that might be helpful for students who are interested in becoming tutors.
For how far out is the scheduling and whatnot? So if it's because I'm guessing the tutors are kind of based on need based UM, independent on how many students sign up for tutoring in that subject, is that correct?
Matthias R.
07:14:12 PM
Can you schedule tutoring and academic coaching during DKU?
Well, it's not. It's actually we try to cover we we kind of get the subjects first and then the tutors first and then the students come in after so we know the subjects that we want to tutor for. We know the ones that are, you know, super popular like your algebra, algebra for calculus, those type of things, a lot of our math courses we have an awful lot of people with those types of specialties, so we really try to hire.
As many tutors as we possibly can, just.
Because we know there's a need.
So on, well, actually, we'll start hiring. Usually at the end of March 1st, part of April 4 fall.
Matthias R.
07:14:40 PM
yes
As far as scheduling, tutoring and academic coaching, are you OK? Once you have your course schedule?
You're going to be scheduling for fall or scheduling. Doesn't open until the first or our tutoring doesn't begin until the first day of classes, so you can't actually schedule until the first day of class, but once you have your schedule, we'll be able to. You know you'll be able to go in and look at that academic success plan then and see what is available and what options you have for those courses that you're in.
Alright, any other questions?
Julia M.
07:15:47 PM
How much do tutoring sessions cost?
Alright, well that looks like uhm all the questions they have. Thank you. Oh wait, hold on.
One more, sneaking them in at the last second.
Oh, Julia, Sessions are absolutely free. There's no cost whatsoever for any of our services, so everything we do is at no cost to the student. Technically, it's part of that general fee that's in your tuition, so you've technically already paid for us, so we say go ahead and use us. Use us at abusus, 'cause you already paid.
Matthias R.
07:16:30 PM
How long is tutoring sessions?
Yes, and that as a current grad student and someone who also attended Kent State in undergrad, I can't stress enough. Definitely utilize these different resources that you have there there for you in pretty much all cases. They're free, definitely, take advantage of them.
And they're 50 minutes, so it's it's a 50 minute session.
SO50, I don't know if you're getting 50 or 15 with my mask, but 50 minutes.
Matthias R.
07:16:52 PM
thank you
Alright, well if there are no more questions, Dan, do you mind giving out where to contact you and where to find you one more time for them?
Yeah, sure, Yep. Just reach us at the Q. Like I said on this slide that's up asc@kent.edu as our email address. You can certainly reach out to that email and you can always call our office at 330-672-3190 Monday through Friday.
Alright, well thank you so much and thank you to everybody who attended this call this evening. Uhm, if any of you are curious or you miss something came in late, this recording will be posted on the Kent State website. I'm not sure when but it will be.
Posted for you to go back and watch and view as many times as you need to.
Right, thank you, and uh, go flashes.
